Much has been made of Ian Bell’s inability to make runs in times of crisis. But this afternoon raised some questions about how well England’s bowlers respond to pressure. Of course, you can’t expect bowlers to tear through a quality batting line-up on a lifeless track. But you do expect them to stick at their task and create a bit of pressure with decent line and length.Particularly disappointing was Jimmy Anderson. England desperately needed their senior bowler to set the example. Instead he bowled too many poor balls and had the body language of a sulky teen. It was too reminiscent of a couple of tough sessions during the Ashes.

The suspense is over as the touring party for the Ashes series in Australia has been announced. The squad so selected is more or less on expected lines, though there would always be a debate over the selection or non selection of  a few fringe players. The squad Andrew Strauss (capt), Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Ian Bell, Eoin Morgan, Matt Prior, St...

Ashes-my Views On England

- November 30, 2010
I still can’t believe that after all the speculation and the excitement about the start of yet another Ashes series, the first test is already over. The biggest surprise of the first test was Australia didn’t win at their fortress Gabba! In a way Australia’s worst  fears have come true as the bowling attack wasn’t penetrative enough and th...

Ashes 5.2: England Looking For Trouble

- January 29, 2011
It is safe to conclude that Jimmy Anderson is Ian Bell’s personal nightwatchman. For the second time after Perth he is doing his duty protecting Mr. Bell. I know Collingwood bats higher than Bell, but by his own admission he is a dead man walking and at an average of 14 at #5, in this series, clearly he does not even qualify to be a nightwatchman. Even his own.It is quite surprising that Aus...
